A new study suggests that regular intake of probiotics may help in lowering high blood pressure. Researchers looked at data from nine studies examining links between blood pressure and probiotic use, involving a total of 543 adults with either normal or elevated blood pressure.
People who consumed probiotics over a period of at least several months showed a modest reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure vs. those who did not.
The study, published in the journal Hypertension, does not prove cause and effect; it only points to an association between increased probiotic intake and lower blood pressure readings. That said, it suggests that regular consumption of probiotics could be part of a healthy lifestyle to help reduce high blood pressure, maintain healthy blood pressure levels and reduce cardiovascular risk.
